- Research evaluation: When I was R&D
Analyst of the CSIC I written several internal reports and papers
on the research activity of this organism, concretely, on patents [1] and
research contracts. I also worked with the CDTI analyzing the
network collaboration in the 6th Framework Programme [2,3,4,5].
- Quantitative web
studies: during my participation in the Cybermetrics Lab, I developed
some researches in several lines around the Web from a quantitative
view.
- Web usage studies: Using the web
transaction logs, I have made some studies on the users’ behaviour in a
web site as a way to improve the web architecture of the site [6]. I have
studied if they spend more time in a site depending of if they came
from a search engine query, a web link of from the root of the site [7]. Also, I graphed the
path network of a website as a way to evaluate its
web architecture [8].
- Networks visualization: This was the
main line; in fact, it was the theme of my PhD Thesis. I have made
network maps of the European [9], Nordic [10],
Ibero-american [11] and
World-class [12] universities on the
Web. The main result is that the university network graphs have
scale-free and Small-worlds properties. The network is set up by local
or regional sub-networks which are aggregated by geographical or
linguistic criteria. These groups are linked between them through
gateway universities that mediate between the sub-network and the main
one.
- Web demography: This line assumes that
the web pages birth, grow and died. In this sense, I studied the age of
the web as well as developed several indicators to measure the
obsolescence of web spaces [13]. A
longitudinal study showed that the Web grows in an irrational process
and it increases destroying the previous Web [14].
- University rankings: I have collaborated in the
design and building of one of the most important University rankings, Ranking Web of World Universities. The
methodology and the main highlights were published [15,16].
- Web bibliometrics: This recent line is focused on
the study of the research activity according to web-based services such
as Google
Scholar
Citations and Microsoft
Academic Search [19]. In
this sense, I have made a Map of Science throught the label used by
each profile [17]
and a collaboration study at institutional and national level [18]
using Google
Scholar Citations. As a result, I published a book on academic search engines [20].
- Altmetrics: this new field is devoted to explore the meaning of alternative indicators from academic social sites for research evaluation.
Collaboration
If you are interested in carrying out studies on
academic search engines (Google Scholar or Microsoft Academic Search), social sites for scientists
(ResearchGate, Academia.edu or Mendeley) or other relevant websites (repositories, web databases, journal sites, etc.),

Hobbies
One of the most important
hobbies is my love to the modern architecture of the XX and
XXI Centuries, mainly the Modern Movement of the 20’s and
30’s. I have got a personal web site in Flickr where I like to upload images of building
that I photograph in my trips for Spain and Europe. My biggest
satisfaction was that some of my pics were used in the "Architectuur
en Alfabet
" architecture exhibition at Leiden in
2009. Other
hobbies are ridding in bike across Córdoba, music, playing
guitar and fencing.
